Description

Don't miss this special presentation by Peter A. Cowdrey, Exhibit Research Specialist at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum!

In period dress as a 16th century Spanish mariner, Mr. Cowdrey will show replicated charts and reproduction navigational instruments. His PowerPoint program offers participants the opportunity to witness the navigational procedures and to examine images of the charts produced by early explorers in their attempts to describe the new land which Juan Ponce de León named “La Florida.” It is meant to prepare Floridians of all ages for the 500th anniversary of the first arrival of Juan Ponce de León to our peninsula.

This program incorporates photographs taken at the Museum of Florida History’s newest permanent exhibit, “Forever Changed: La Florida, 1513-1821,” and at Mission San Luis in Tallahassee.  Sincere appreciation is offered to Museum Director Dr. Jeana Brunson, to Professional Relations Officer Wanda Richey, to Visitor Services Supervisor Bonnie McCluskey; and to Mission San Luis Outreach Coordinator Erick Lopez for making these photographs possible.

Pete Cowdrey is a life-long native Floridian with family roots in Florida that go back four generations.  He spent part of his childhood living aboard a 63’ schooner and later went into surveying and mapping before becoming a confirmed history major, museum educator, and teacher.  He and his wife Carol are retired educators and both have resided in Tallahassee for the past 40 years.

Join us after the presentation for a shrimp boil on the docks, all for just a $5 donation.
